Maybe this will end the hype around mobile music. Research firm Entertainment Media Research has conducted a survey of mobile users which found just 6% would buy music from their operator’s portal, while 44% aren’t interested in downloading music to their mobile phone.
Does it mean mobile music is doomed to fail? Not necessarily. What about the other 50% of users, who are presumably interested in downloading music, just not from their operator portal? It’s good news for iTunes, Napster, Virgin and other music download services, assuming they get their mobile acts together.
I’m guessing operators like 3 will have something to say about the results too, given that they’re selling lots of downloadable tunes and music videos already.
