Fancy free mobile calls? That’s the prospect being held out by ROK Mobile with the launch of Viper, its new VoIP service that lets you make calls from your mobile via its Bluetooth connection.
The company has released the software on its Viper website, which initially works only on Bluetooth-enabled Nokia handsets, but will eventually support over 100 phones. The application works a bit like instant messaging software, showing your list of contacts and whether they’re available to chat.
You need Bluetooth in your computer for Viper to work, but ROK says it’ll be selling an adapter for people who don’t have Bluetooth built in. Here’s the slight catch: calls are only free to other Viper users, although ROK chairman Jonathan Kendrick says “even when you call non-Viper mobiles and landlines, the cost will be much, much lower than standard network charges.”
I’ll be talking to ROK later this week to find out more, and we’ll have a Hands On test following shortly afterwards too.
