Once upon a time, buying ringtones and wallpapers meant paying for them. Forever. Well, until your phone was cut off and the bailiffs arrived, anyway. But now there’s a way to actually make some dosh from mobile content.
Sixophone is a WAP site where you can buy ringtones, wallpapers and adult content, with items costing £1 a pop. However, whenever you buy something, a shop is created on the site in your name, through which you can tout the content to up to six friends via text message.
If they buy it, you get 10% of the proceeds. If they then sell it on, you get 1%. And this carries on through to the sixth person, which apparently means you can trouser up to £500 from just one ringtone. It all gets paid into a PayPal account too, which means it’s easy to get at your cash.
It’s certainly a new approach to mobile content. Although having briefly (honest!) browsed the adult category, I’m not sure I want the reputation that’d come with touting Big Boobs, Bikini Girls, and Butts wallpapers to friends…
