Christmas is coming, and thieves are hoping to get fat (on the proceeds of nicking stuff from your car). Garmin has announced seven tips to help keep your satnav units safe:
1. If your sat-nav unit gets stolen the last thing you want is for the unit to guide the thief to your home address. Make sure you choose a sat-nav device with built in anti-theft features and that you activate them to ensure your unit cannot be used by anyone who doesn’t know the 4-digit PIN.
2. Don’t leave the sat-nav or its mount in view, thieves will assume the unit is in your vehicle.
3. If your sat-nav unit is compact, like all the Garmin nüvi systems, take it with you when you leave the car.
4. Wipe away suction pad marks that are left on the windscreen, these are a clear give away to thieves.
5. Never leave your GPS unit in the glove box, this is the first place thieves will look.
6. Always make a note of the model and serial number of your unit.
7. Register your product with the manufacturer and inform them if it gets stolen. Whilst the company won’t be able to prevent someone using a stolen unit they will be able to contact the authorities if someone provides the serial number to that unit in relation to receiving mapping updates or if a fault develops with their unit.
