Motorola has announced that it is to supply Namibian telco MTC with new wind & solar-powered mobile signal relay stations. The renewable energy sources are able to generate 1200 watts of stable power, enough to run the relay gear and all the associated tech at the station. The installations were developed and tested in the UK, near Swindon.
However, somewhat depressingly, a separate press release on MTC’s website also announces that over 50 solar panels worth around $600,000 Namibian dollars (approx. £43,000 UKP) were stolen from other of its installations around the country – in under a month. Bringing new technology to the developing world clearly isn’t always plain sailing…
