Toshiba Portege G500

G500_FO_Main.jpgJust catching up with some interesting stuff from last week’s mammoth 3GSM event. And this handset is one of many intriguing new devices. The Portege G500 provides a Windows Mobile 5.0 OS, two megapixel camera, secondary camera for video phone calls, music playback and 64MB of onboard memory. So far, sooooo familiar. But this sliding sexpot also features a fingerprint sensor for both security and easy navigation.

How paranoid do you have to be to insist on hiding your data behind a biological blockade? And won’t it get your display even more smudgy than usual? Clearly retinal scanning is the answer – especially when we finally see devices that beam images directly into your very eyes. Perhaps at 3GSM 2008, eh Toshiba?

it’s been proved that you can lift someone’s fingerprints off the shiny surface of their phone using a phone-quality camera and then use it to make a false fingerprint that will fool the phone’s fingerprint sensor.

  2. Marcus says:

This phone uses Windows Mobile 6, not 5 as stated above.

  3. Caspar Field says:

That’s cool – when this phone was first announced, Toshiba put WM5 on it because 6 had only just come out – it must have been upgraded. Thanks for letting us know.

I wonder if this thing is going to have a touch screen. I almost bought the HTC S710 until I found out it had no touchy.

the picture looks like a g500, not g900 to me

    Er… KEITH!

    Thanks, D, you’re right. Here’s the actual G900:

    Well, what’s a 5 or a 9 between friends…? ;-)

Of course, the S5007V has its own compromises. It has a smaller 12.1 inch 1280 x 800 WXGA LED screen (the ThinkPad X300, Dell XPS M1300 and MacBook Air have 13.3 inch screens) and a relatively slow but low-voltage processor
