Boredom may prove Mobile TV’s best ally

According to a new survey by Research and Markets, punters in Finland, England, France, Italy, Korea and Japan all stated that boredom was the number one reason why they were likely to start using mobile TV. Considering its a struggle not to turn on the TV at home when you’re feeling a little bored, it kind of makes sense that the same will be true for mobile TV services, once they really start to spread their wings.

But while between 65% and 80% of respondents wanted mobile TV and video — and 41% of Finns would be happy to pay $12 (£6) a month for services — only 3m of Korea’s (where mobile TV is widely available) 48m subscribers have so far signed-up. We think: once awareness of it rises, mobile TV take-up will snowball rapidly, just as broadband did.

Interesting – and positive – research.

But what about on-demand mobile TV? Where the viewer gets to watch what they want to watch when they want to watch it?

Surely on-demand mobile TV is an even more attractive proposition than full-form broadcast TV on mobiles?

And surely on-demand mobile TV streamed over mass-market 2.5G GPRS as well as over 3G and via wi-fi represents not just the higher value mobile TV proposition, but also the larget market?
