Nokia announces Gizmo Beta for internet calls on N95 and N80

Gizmo screenIn a very cool move, Nokia Beta Labs has just released a public Beta trial for the popular open standards-based internet telephony app, Gizmo.

Available now for Nokia’s range-topping N95 ‘multimedia computer’ handset, and for its N80 Internet Tablet, Gizmo delivers free user-to-user internet calls and instant messaging. You need a decent data plan to use it, of course, otherwise you’ll be in danger of running up a somewhat chubby monthly bill. But Gizmo is a well-regarded competitor to Skype, and it’s great to see it arrive on the mobile scene.

It’s pretty ace is Gizmo, I used it a lot when I was using my Nokia 770 Internet tablet all the time. Thing is, with the N73 (and all N series) being able to run Fring, Gizmo just seems outdated now.

I suppose it maybe depends whether you want an all-in-one app or a dedicated bit of software for one service. It’s definitely interesting to contrast Nokia’s support for Gizmo with certain UK operators crippling the N95’s voice over IP capabilities (which would leave me pretty annoyed if I’d just upgraded to one).

We covered Fring a few weeks back but haven’t had chance to try it as yet. Sounds like you’re pretty pleased with it – any tips for new users? For those who haven’t heard about the service, you can read Fraser’s piece about it by clicking here.
