According to a small survey sample by Channel Checkers (which specialises in checking how long certain products take to order), there’s an average of 25 people on the waiting list for an iPhone at each AT&T store in the US. Channel Checkers called 36 stores in total, of which it claims there are roughly 10,000 in America (which is confusing us because Apple recently stated that iPhone would launch in just over 1,800 AT&T/ Cingular outlets), and found that 64% of them were running waiting list schemes. We make that at least 250,000 people who will be waiting for an iPhone on day one.
Best factoid of the piece is that one New York outlet is claiming to have a grand total of 1,979 people on its waiting list (you’d think that you might try another store, right?). Oh, and one dealer is clearly already bored of the whole thing, calling the number of inquiries about the new phone ‘interminable’.
We’re a long, long way from being bored by iPhone. To check out our other coverage of Apple’s red-hot handset, just click here.

I will not be getting one unless they offer them carrier free… I can just see Vodafone or T-Mobile messing the interface up with their terrible logo/identities
Ha! The Orange homescreen on an iPhone… that would be a darkly ironic twist in the story of phone interface development.
I can’t see Apple letting something like that happen; it has been pretty hardcore with US carrier AT&T. Steve Jobs (Apple CEO) is a bit of a stickler for detail… Which could be the understatement of the decade.
Agree Teton. Welcome to the Apple iPhone presented by Vodafone!
