Does the iPhone have GPS?

LoopRumors is suggesting that the new car icon (click here to see our story on this, complete with image of the icon) on the iPhone’s Google Maps screen could mean that the Apple handset has GPS features. This is based on a story from someone at a trucking company in the US. It goes like this:

A local trucking company also confirmed that an AT&T salesman pitched selling the company a large number of iPhones at a discount, as low as $249 for a bulk order of over 100 phones. He promoted the iPhone as “a great way to monitor and track where the trucks were throughout the country by using its GPS functionality.” The salesman reportedly had a non-working demo of the iPhone, and said the units would be available on June 29th.

Looks like another one to add to the speculation we’re attempting to track over here.

I believe that the E911 law mandates that cell phones have GPS, in order to provide accurate location to 911 operators. So GPS should be standard on all phones.

  2. Alex says:

must be a slow news day…every cell phone with bluetooth can be equipped with gps using bluetooth gps receivers so the iphone would be excellent for navigating with its large display even without internal gps – i’m not saying it doesn’t have that but you have to keep that in mind.

in fact i am using tomtom software on my w950 without gps at all, just for the maps.

  3. Caspar Field says:

Cell tracking isn’t the same as true GPS, and I don’t think you can argue that an add-on Bluetooth GPS receiver is the same as (potentially) an in-built GPS chip. But this is all (someone else’s) speculation, of course.

Still, It’d be a nice ‘and also’ for Steve Jobs to reveal on 11th June, that’s for sure. And he likes his surprises does our Steve.

  4. Nick says:

Having a real GPS chip in a phone is actually quite nice. I’ve got a Nokia n95, and the build in GPS with smart2go is extremely great to have and use. I only wish that you wouldn’t have to pay extra to have it talk to you and give you the spoken directions.
