UK telecoms regulator Ofcom has announced it is launching an investigation into the various penalty charges that get lumped on our bills when we do something deemed ‘bad’ by the operators. These include: not paying by direct debit (how dare we!), late payment, having service restored after it has been restricted or suspended (we like that one — getting charged extra for being reconnected after being disconnected for not being able to pay the bill in the first place), and early termination fees.
The last point seems kind of fair enough — you can’t expect to have a nice, new phone on subsidised contract then bugger off after six months and not have to pay something towards the cost of the handset. But as for the rest, it’s good to see Ofcom continuing to fight our corner.
