It sounds like Carphone Warehouse’s deal to sell the new Nokia 8600 exclusively for six weeks has paid-off for the retail giant. Mobile Today is reporting that some CW stores have sold-out of their stock of the phone (which goes for up to £600/ $1200 SIM-free), with students apparently blowing their loan cheques on the 8600 with particular abandon.
With the pretty but technically uninspiring 8600 available for free on Orange’s free-minute-overkill Panther (£55/ $110 per month) tariff, we’re guessing that’s where quite a few of the sales have been made. In our experience, you’d need to be suffering from extreme verbal diarrhea to crank through 1300 minutes a month. It’s also worth noting that Nokia’s range-topping N95 can also be had for free on Orange’s £55 Panther contract, and that — battery life aside — is a far superior bit of kit.
