Death to cables! WiTricity invented

Sitting here surrounded by cables, chargers, gadgets and bongo mags empty tea cups, the news of wireless electricity being invented (well, okay, more like re-imagined ‘cos apparently someone first thought of it in the 19th Century), is lapping warmly on the shores of our minds.

‘WiTricity’, as it has been dubbed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) team that dreamt it up, differs from previous efforts in being non-directional. That means you could have a single power source humming away in the corner of the room charging-up your mobile whathaveyous wherever they might lie. Ooh. Nice thought.

The MIT team has thus far managed to power a 60w light bulb over a distance of  two-metres with a transmission loss of only 40% (which apparently is pretty good). This isn’t a technology that you’ll be enjoying tomorrow, from the sounds of things, but you might one day be able to bore your kids to tears with stories of needing a different charger for every device. Oh, and if you want to read all the technical ins-and-outs of the work, you can check it out on the MIT news website.
