Honestly, ring this number and you will be greeted by the sound of the world’s largest glacier melting in Iceland before your very ears. The brainchild of Slade Art School graduate Katie Paterson, ‘Vatnajokull (sound of)’, symbolises the ‘vanishing away of the world’ through sound.
Quirk-monger Virgin Mobile has endorsed the art installation and the work is hanging on display in the Slade Gallery, London, featuring a large burning neon sign of the mobile number. In turn this is linked to a microphone with a mobile phone interface that’s burrowed deep inside the polar ice cap in the Jokulsarlin glacier lagoon.
Only one person can be connected at any one time and we managed to tune in (at the cost of an international call it must be said) to hear what sounded like a running bath wired through a reverb generator. Or the world going down the swanny. As with all art it’s open to interpretation.
