The GSM Association is the official body representing mobile operators, and as such is a big cheese of the mobile industry. So news that it’s announced a new programme to speed up the launch of innovative mobile services, products and applications is sure to get plenty of attention.
But hang on a minute. The GSMA says that the scheme aims to tackle the “mobile innovation bottleneck” that stops good ideas getting to market. What bottleneck? In the last couple of years alone, we’ve seen the rise of mobile TV, dual-download music, PlayStation-quality 3D games, mobile social networking, and GPS mobile navigation, to name but five.
And when pressed, most people would admit that all those areas still need work to make them appeal to more mobile users. It’s hard not to wonder if operators shouldn’t be focusing more on improving the services they already have, as well as looking for new and ‘innovative’ ideas…
