Google aquires intriguing new web-phone service

Google announced yesterday that it has acquired GrandCentral Communications, a service that lets you use a single number for all of your phones. Although details of the purchase have not been disclosed, it is easy to see why Google was interested in the service the company offers.

After you have set up a single number for all of your phones (scatterbrains rejoice), you can then assign which phones you want to ring according to who is calling you. For example, you could ensure that work contacts never call your home phone, only your work mobile even though both phones would operate on the same number.

Seems like a good idea to us and obviously to Google too. The service is currently running a Beta of which there are still some invitations left. Unfortunately GrandCentral is a US only service at the moment but with Google now at the helm, there is a good chance it will branch out into other regions too.
