Vodafone launches Windows Live Messenger

logotipo_Vodafone.jpgVodafone Portugal has become the first of the operator’s countries to launch Windows Live Messenger chat service to its subscribers after reaching an agreement with Microsoft.

Basically, this enables Microsoft Windows Live Messenger on 700,000 Live! mobile phones in Portugal, letting users chat with all the Messenger contacts they have on their computer, check their contacts’ online status, and send and receive emoticons. Users can even move seamlessly between their phone and their PC while chatting if they’re so inclined.

The service is accessed via a free downloadable application to the phone (Bought using an SMS shortcode, or from the Vodafone Portugal website). At first the service is free to use, but from the end of October subscribers will have to start paying to chat.

The service is just the latest from Vodafone’s new Mobile Internet strategy of securing deals with top Internet brands. In the UK this has seen Microsoft’s Windows Live Hotmail, YouTube, MySpace and Yahoo Mail all become available as ‘Mobile Favourites’ on handsets, so don’t bet against Live Messenger also appearing in the UK sometime in the near future.
