A worldwide survey of technology and content consumption among 18,000 kids (8-14) and young people (14-24) from 16 different countries has found that, on the whole, they’re into being connected and into great content… But not that bothered about technology itself. Organised by MTV, Nickelodeon and Microsoft, the survey perhaps unsurprisingly also found that TV is the most-enjoyed pastime among those questioned.
Instant messaging is the preferred form of communication among both groups (which fits with the massive upsurge in texting that’s been witnessed over the last few years), with 70% of 14-24s checking IM as soon as they switched on their computers. The survey also found that online and TV content is just ‘expected’ to be on mobile now; this is a generation that’s grown-up in a high-tech world and appears to take that tech for granted.
In famously tech-crazy Japan, it seems that young people actually have quite limited access to PCs, and so the mobile phone has become the ‘key digital device‘. In the fear-obsessed UK, 81% of 8-14s felt ’safer’ having their mobile with them. “Under the age of 14, kids generally use the phone as a toy. After 14, the mobile phone quickly becomes a means of self-expression and communication,” said Colleen Fahey Rush, Executive VP of Research for MTV Networks.
