LG releases 3G phone for all

LG_3G.JPGLG has launched a cheap-as-chips 3G handset, the KU250, in Singapore. It’s the first such handset launched under the GSM Association’s “3G for All” campaign announced at the industry’s annual shindig at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona this year.

The candybar handset is only 16mm thick with 1.3 megapixel camera, MicroSD slot and Bluetooth. It also has a neat multi-tasking function letting you answer the phone, play games and listen to MP3 tracks at the same time, although quite how you’d manage to do all that is unclear!

“3G for All” is a campaign to introduce 3G networks and services to the entire mobile market by lowering production costs to ensure handsets are affordably by all. As an indication, The KU250 is being sold Sim-free for only $268 dollars.

The KU250 beat off strong competition from 18 other phones from eight major manufacturers in Barcelona to be the first “3G for All” handset. It was selected by 12 operators judging the competition including Hutchison 3G, Orange, T-Mobile, Telefonica and Vodafone – so we might even see it here in the UK one day.
