Hewlett-Packard has developed a neat new service making it possible to print documents on any printer anywhere in the world using a mobile phone. So, for instance, a business traveller can save his document in New York, then print it before his business meeting in India when he gets off the plane.
The New York Times has reported that HP Labs researchers have come up with Cloudprint after months of effort after a conversation among the team, adding that HP has now quietly released the service with the minimum of fanfare.
Coudprint requires users to save their documents on HP servers connected to the internet. The user is then assigned a document code, which is transmitted to their phone. Then, when the user is near any web-connected computer, they simply have to log onto the Cloudprint website and enter the code stored on their mobile to retrieve the document(s) as a PDF ready for printing.
To help find a nearby printer, Cloudprint will also include a directory service using Google Maps (which is a great idea). At the moment, Cloudprint only works with Windows-connected computers but a Mac-compatible version is in the works. Check out the Beta version over at the HP site by clicking here.
