Yahoo Mail gains PC to mobile SMS function

Yahoo logo.gifYahoo seems to be taking something of a sideways step toward mobiles. The company is planning to add SMS functionality to its webmail service, meaning you’ll be able to send text messages to mobiles from within Yahoo Mail.

There are no details on what the service will cost yet but it seems likely that someone (either the sender or the receiver) will have to foot the bill somewhere along the line, as otherwise any wi-fi equipped phone could effectively send SMS messages for free via a Yahoo Mail account accessed on the web.

We covered Yahoo’s plans with 3 to offer instant messaging earlier this month, but adding a carrier-free SMS service to the equation certainly mixes things up somewhat. What is particularly interesting is that users will apparently be able to ‘easily convert their e-mail messages into IM chats or switch to a text message dialogue with the click of a button, when friends come online or go mobile, and vice-versa’.

Sounds like a great idea to us. The service will initially work in the US, Canada, India and the Philippines but we’re hopeful that it will make its way over to European shores before long.
