Apple announces iPod touch, cuts iPhone 8GB to $399, drops iPhone 4GB

New iPod

As predicted, Apple has announced the new iPod touch, which offers a reduced — but, crucially, still impressive — set of the iPhone’s features. What wasn’t predicted was that alongside the iPod touch announcement, Apple has also lopped $200 (£100) off the price of the 8GB iPhone, taking it to $399 (£200) and discontinued the unpopular 4GB version completely.

The new iPod touch comes in 8GB and 16GB flash-based versions, priced at $299 (£150) and $399 (£200) respectively. At just 8mm deep, over 3mm less than the iPhone, the new iPod is incredibly thin, and comes with 11b/g wi-fi. Why include wi-fi? Because the iPod comes with the iPhone’s Safari browser, YouTube app… And works with the newly announced iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store.

Killing the 4GB iPhone might have been predicted, but the huge price cut for the 8GB version is likely to bring a significant boost in sales (and bodes well for European pricing). Apple has just stepped up its attack; Nokia, Sony… Over to you once more.

Well, this is the thanks I get for buying Apple products for the past twenty years. Not only do you drop the price by 200.00 but,you only give me 100.00 back to spend in your store. As far as I’m concerned, you are calling every Iphone customer that paid full price an Idiot. I will not ever set foot in one of your stores again.

    That’s my story.

  2. Tom Flowers says:

I wonder if the new price for the 8GB iPhone is just setting the stage for a new 16GB model, at, say $500. The prices would have had to be adjusted at some point to introduce a 16GB model anyway, as they could hardly have made it more expensive than the original $600 8GB model.

  3. Caspar Field says:

That would make sense — and be more useful. 8GB is hardly cutting edge these days. We’re definitely waiting for iPod touch v2 before getting one, as it’ll have the inevitable doubling-up of storage. At 32GB it’ll be a far more tempting prospect.

  4. Tom Flowers says:

I agree on holding out for a 32GB iTouch… as it happens I was waiting to see what would be announced last week before getting a new iPod – and the 80GB iPod classic looks like a real bargain at around £150!

  5. Tom Flowers says:

Heh… i just called it iTouch by mistake!

  6. Caspar Field says:

We read somewhere that the click wheel isn’t as good on the new iPod classic, which, if true, is a shame because those high capacities (80GB and 160GB) are really nice.

I do not understand why you are so upset. As all products are, they are expensive when first lauched, and as time passes they drop prices. For instance, the PS2, I know someone who wanted it first hand, bought for an exceptional amount. Three weeks later the price was dropped. This is incredibly predictable, it’s a pity you didn’t see it coming. So you could gave waited a little longer, and you wouldn’t have been this upset.
    Much Obliged,
