Firefox, the world’s most popular open-source web browser is appearing on mobiles next year — and that’s from the people behind it at Mozilla.
Mike Schroepfer, Mozilla’s VP of engineering, has said on a blog that a mobile version of Firefox will be introduced at some point after 31 December 2007. In his words: ‘I’m very excited to announce that we plan to rock [the mobile web]’.
The new web browser will run Firefox extensions and developers will be able to build applications for it. Amongst a lot of tech jargon about tier-1 platforms, Schroepfer said that as part of an overhaul of the Mozilla framework, mobile browser will be included as part of core platform developments, alongside the web browser.
A Mozilla-based browser is already available on the Nokia N800 tablet device, but Schroepfer didn’t say what other devices mobile Firefox will run on.
Companies like Opera already offer their own mobile browsers, but Mozilla’s advantage is the massive community of happy Firefox users around the world, no doubt each with a mobile phone.
