Google’s ‘Gphone’ shapeshifts into ‘Gbutton’ for entry-level handsets

gbuttonRecent rumours that the long, um, rumoured Google ‘Gphone‘ project has morphed into new mobile operating system that centres around a ‘Gbutton’ that links you rapidly with Google’s services.

That’s according to a USA Today story which suggests that the Gphone will counter Apple’s iPhone by attacking the lower-end of the market, bringing high-end services such as web and mail to entry-level handsets. The story quotes Richard Doherty, research director at The Envisioneering Group as saying that:

Google is driving toward getting device makers to produce basic handsets equipped with a “Gbutton” that takes users right to a Google texting screen. The goal: Get GPhone texters in the habit of querying its vast databases for directions, phone numbers, movie times or restaurant tips and woo advertisers to sponsor GPhone-delivered answers.

Much reference is also made to Google’s recent acquisition of messaging company Jaiku, and particularly some SMS-related patents Jaiku holds. Altogether thie piece represents yet more interesting rumblings about the Gmonster, which could be ‘a matter of weeks‘ away. You can read the full USA Today story on Yahoo here.
