Following on from its publication of some great live shots of Samsung’s red-hot new cameraphone, the G800, Czech site iDNES.cz has now released the first pictures taken with the handset.
The benefit of the G800’s five-megapixel sensor — additional detail — is pretty clear… But to be honest, we’re disappointed that the phone’s optical-zoom lens doesn’t seem to have much improved the old cameraphone bugbears of soft-focus and poor colour detection (especially blues). It’s also looks Samsung has tried to address the focus issue by using strong-ish image sharpening after the shot is taken.
Are we being too fussy? We think not. If the cameraphone continues to kill the digital camera market, it shouldn’t be at the expense of image quality. We’re not saying the G800’s shots look bad, just that they should be better in more ways than just boasting more pixels. Take a look at some other example images (here, here and here) and decide for yourself.
