Although we regard sensationalist media soundbites like ‘Worse than drink driving’ as a little over the top, there is no denying that driving while using a mobile phone, as harmless as it may seem, is a pretty irresponsible thing to do.
Unfortunately the UK’s motorists don’t see it that way and the site BetterDrivingPlease.com claims that nearly a quarter of all the reports it receives are about people using mobiles behind the wheel. Since stricter penalties were introduced earlier this year, 1,119 drivers have been spotted using a mobile and reported to Better DrivingPlease.com.
The founder of the BetterDrivingPlease, Andrew McGavin, said the website is placing pressure upon the police to act.
Ordinary people want something done about this. They are sick of seeing drivers flout the law so openly.
Currently, any driver caught using a mobile phone faces a fine and three penalty points though jail time is not out of the question depending on the circumstances (yikes!).
