Third party iPhone GPS module incoming

partfoundry-iphone-gps.jpgHurtling headlong towards 2008, Apple and third party developers are starting to fill in the blanks in the iPhone’s feature set with gusto. Just yesterday we got wind of full Microsoft Exchange support incoming for the iPhone and today we have learnt that the heat is on to get a GPS module up and running for the device. This isn’t the first of course, but we have been hearing whispers about the TomTom  GPS module being a potential fake over the last few days.

At any rate, a company called Partfoundry has built a tremendously fugly working prototype of a GPS module of its own for the iPhone and is working to a February deadline for a commercial release. The Partfoundry GPS module (which will surely get a better name before it is released) will be able to deliver 16 channels of satellite positioning and will work with any GPS navigational software that you choose.

Obviously this will mean that some other third parties will need to get busy in the software department but with the iPhone SDK shipping in February too, this shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Could be a nice stop gap until the 3G iPhone comes along (as long as Partfoundry work on making it a bit more pretty).
