What are Apple’s iPhone plans for Macworld 2008 this week?

iphone-macworld-expo.jpgIf you’re an Apple-head, the Macworld Expo and Conference is one of the biggest diary dates of the year. Or, to be specific, Steve Jobs’ keynote speech is, since it’s when the company unveils new products, usually putting an end to weeks of fierce speculation. Tomorrow sees the latest Macworld keynote, so what does Steve have planned on the iPhone front?

The jury’s out on whether the 3G iPhone will be announced or not. My instinct is to say it won’t, since if it was, you’d expect it to be going on sale straight away. All indications so far are that it won’t be on sale until later in the year, perhaps with its own launch event, rather than being bundled into a conference keynote.

However, other iPhone Macworld rumours revolve around a beefed-up version of the existing EDGE iPhone, possibly with an expanded internal memory of 16GB or even 32GB. More space for songs, and a way to keep the device in the spotlight while we all wait for the 3G model.

Whichever of the above two rumours turns out to be true, I think we’ll see some new iPhone applications demonstrated by Jobs at Macworld, including some big names. GPS navigation would be one obvious candidate, alongside the release of plug-in hardware for the current iPhone. Perhaps some more Web 2.0 apps too, especially photo-sharing. Perhaps there’ll be a new iPhone firmware announcement with new features too, such as video recording.

iPhone games could be on the menu too, if Apple is ready to start selling some through the iTunes Store. If it does, expect the likes of EA Mobile, Gameloft and Namco to be on board, along with (hopefully) some of Apple’s own games making use of the iPhone’s music capabilities.

Either way, watch this space, as we’ll be reporting on all iPhone-related announcements from Jobs’ keynote tomorrow.
