If Apple gets its act into gear in Europe, we’ll soon be able to rent films from the iTunes Movie Rentals service and watch them on our iPhones. In the meantime, the handset does offer some useful services for film buffs. Cinema Times is a good example, being a neat and simple web app that lets you enter your location, and find out what films are on in local cinemas.
Usually when I see this kind of application, it’s US-only, but Cinema Times is fully optimised for the UK too. Typing in Bishop’s Stortford as my location brought up a list of nearby cinemas, with the local Empire multiplex at the top. Clicking through gave me a list of films, many of which had links to their trailers, and IMDB listings. The trailer links take you to Apple’s own trailer site, which has iPhone-friendly QuickTime vids.
Meanwhile, at the top of the listings page, the cinema’s address is in a box, which if pressed takes you directly to its location in iPhone’s Google Maps application. Meanwhile, there’s also a phone number, which you can jab to call up the cinema and order tickets. I assumed Cinema Times would be just that – film listings with times – but the inclusion of the trailer, IMDB, map and calling links makes it an essential site for any iPhone-owning film fan.
