Could using a mobile phone harm your unborn child?

mobile-pregnant.jpgScares around mobile phones and possible radiation are as old as… well, mobile phones. But the latest piece of academic research focuses on the potential dangers for pregnant women and their unborn children. Based on a survey of more than 13,000 women in Denmark, it indicates that women who use mobile phones while pregnant are more likely to give birth to children with behavioural problems, including hyperactivity and problems with conduct, emotions and relationships. The research was conducted by UCLA and Aarhus University. Mothers who used mobile phones while pregnant were 54% more likely to have children with behavioural problems, and that if the kids then had their own mobiles before the age of seven, they were 80% more likely to suffer with these problems. The researchers say they were surprised by the results, and tried to explain them by looking at other potential causes – smoking, family psychiatric history and socio-economic status – but couldn’t. They stress other studies are needed, but the news is sure to spook many women in the meantime. (via The Independent
