We have expecting the official announcement of the impressive looking C905 CyberShot since early last week, but the arrival of another camera focussed Sony Ericsson, the S302 Snapshot is a bit of a surprise.
First the C905; Sony Ericsson is claiming that it’s the most advanced camera phone yet and given the spec sheet it’s not a hard boast to swallow. The mooted 8.1 megapixel camera with real camera flash, face detection, auto-focus, smart contrast and image stabilizer are all present and correct. As is the GPS, WiFi, HSDPA (in two of the three variants), 2GB memory card out of the box and the ability to wirelessly send photos to a TV via DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance). Impressive stuff and sweetened all the more with that lovely Cybershot branding.
In comparison the S302 Snapshot is a much less serious beast sporting a humble 2.0 megapixel camera with 2.5 x digital zoom, Photo light and Photo fix all of which are useful if your photos tend to come out looking like they were taken by someone who had been wearing boxing gloves at the time they were snapped.
The S302 can also handle video capture/video streaming and has photo blogging and PictBridge printing built-in too. Besides that the rest of the features are pretty basic with the usual compliment of Bluetooth, Memory Stick Micro support (though there isn’t one bundled with the device) and other extras such as an xHTML web browser, FM radio and 3D games.
More impressive is the GPRS, sticking out like a sore thumb in an otherwise reasonably low spec device, especially seeing as there is neither WiFi or 3G support, just GSM and EDGE. Still it’s a sleek looking beast and should do well with those merely looking to take decent snaps as opposed to photographic masterpieces.
Together the the C905 and the S302 seem to have most of the market covered in terms of mobile photography, though we expect that the difference in price between the two (which is yet to be announced) may leave some wishing for something that falls down the middle.
Both devices are expected to launch towards the end of the summer.
