The iPhone 3G silver apple screen of death strikes again

iphone-silver-apple-screen-of-death.jpgThis is getting beyond a joke. My iPhone 3G just bricked for the third time in four days. Once again, it happened while installing an application, this time via iTunes synching. The results were the same too: the iPhone reset, then hung at the silver apple reboot screen (pictured).

I’ve been forced to do a complete restore again using recovery mode, which is another two-hour job snagging up my iTunes (and interrupting my other PC applications every minute or so as it flicks back to the restoring window). Once was annoying, twice was infuriating, but this third crash has made me think there’s a serious problem with the iPhone 2.0 software.

Mobile industry blog The Boy Genius Report claims that a v2.0.1 of the firmware is being tested already. If so, Apple needs to fix the reliability issues, and get it out. Soon. People poke fun at Microsoft for the famous Windows blue screen of death, but for now, Apple deserves equal brickbats for its silver apple screen of death on the iPhone.

This is a common problem since I upgraded my original iPhone to version 2.0 Friday.
Every time you synch to iTunes, whether you downloaded the app there or on the phone, the app either gets corrupted or the OS can’t handle it. At first, the app just quits. Then, after you try and restart it a couple of times iPhone gives up and crashes.

I hope 2.1 fixes this. Only solution I know is to delete your apps from both the phone and iTunes, download them again on your phone, and then set your iTunes NOT to synch apps until the bug fix happens.

Pretty sloppy, Steve. If I wanted this kind of crap, I would have bought a Microsoft product.

You could keep your old Treo or RAZR handy – at least THEY know to copy and paste – AND you can send a real picture text or MMS with those! As for the issue (as I wait for the SIXTH restore in a week now) is to avoid loading too many apps from the store. The original apps loaded upon a fresh restore work fine but all those purchased will start and then crash. While the delete-reinstall one app trick will fix this for only a while, they will crash again, leading to a reset and to the dreaded SASOD (silver apple screen of death)…and we thought Windows ME was buggy???? I would recommend that anyone NOT use this phone for business until this is fixed. We don’t know when a fix is coming, as the north korean secrecy state never releases details that might shame the regime. I always thought those sad masses in that original macintosh commercial were windows users – hey, that’s us iphone users!
