Today’s iPhone app is, frankly, useless. But it’s free, and is a stroke of genius on the part of Maverick Software, which created it.
It’s called More Cowbell, and it lives up to its name. By which I mean it lets you tap a big on-screen cowbell in time to whatever music you’re playing right then. And EVERY song can benefit from more cowbell, as any fule kno.
What’s more, an upcoming update will apparently refine the app to let you play cowbell by shaking the iPhone rather than tapping it. Utterly, utterly essential. Or should that be udderly? Either way, get it here.

i would actually consider gettin an iphone just for this
I upgraded to iPhone 2.0 two days ago and was surprised at the number of free apps. I downloaded “More Cowbell” as soon as I saw it and it’s been a riot ever since.
As soon as you open it you see the Cowebell and then Bruce Dickinson’s voice (yes, the Bruce Dickinson who puts his pants on one leg at time, but when he’s wearing his pant, he makes Gold Records) comes on and says “I gotta have More Cowbell.” Then you tap away. When you stop, Bruce’s voice comes back again.
Suggestions, assuming there’s no SNL copyright infringment, that after you stop tapping, Bruce repeats a different line:
“Explore the Space”
“I’ve got a fever, and the only prescription, is more cowbell”
“I’ll have you wearing gold plated diapers in no time”
But again, I’m sure they’d need permission for that.
By the way, another cool app is the Flashlight. It comes in pretty handy.
Keep layin down that Cowbell.
