It seems there really is no end to the myriad different uses for text messages. Textually is reporting that in the remote region of Strandir, which is in the West Fjords of Norway, an experiment is being conducted to see how sheep behave while grazing in the mountains during summertime.
Thirteen lucky ewes have had GPS equipment with a GSM transmitter placed in a collar around around their neck, which sends daily SMS messages with their locations back to shepherd HQ. Apparently the purpose of the experiment is to see if the sheep stick by their relatives while munching their way through the countryside. Sounds more like lazy shepherding to us, not that we have any hard and fast scruples on that topic.
Still it’s interesting to see how vast the scope for SMS technology is. Who knows, when everyone finally switches over to cheaper instant messaging solutions in the future, scientific experiments like this one may be the last surviving vestige of the humble text message.
