Analyst firm Gartner reckons 305 million mobile phones were sold in the second quarter of 2008 – 11.8% more than in the same period last year. 42 million of ‘em were sold here in Western Europe, compared to 44 million in North America. Gartner is predicting that sales for 2008 as a whole will top 1.28 billion handsets. The company says Nokia sold an impressive 120.4 million handsets during the second quarter, accounting for 39.5% of all mobile sales. Samsung was in second place with 45.7 million units (15.2%), followed by Motorola’s 30.4 million (10%), LG’s 26.7 million (8.8%) and Sony Ericsson’s 23 million (7.5%). However, sales are slowing in Western Europe – that 42 million figure is down 8.2% on the same period last year. Perhaps that’s not surprising, given that operators are keen to lock consumers into longer 18 or 24-month contracts when they buy new phones.
