N95 8GB firmware update has Comes With Music ‘enablers’

As I wrote late last week, Nokia’s launch handset for its Comes With Music service, the 5310, won’t support over-the-air music downloads. A sensible choice, given that it’s 2G, and will only be available on pay-as-you-go tariffs – with their high data charges.

However, it seems more Comes With Music handsets are on the way, which will be more powerful (and thus will hopefully support OTA downloads). Take the N95 8GB, for example, which has Wi-Fi and 3G. Well, here’s the thing: its latest firmware update has just been released, and among its new features are “Enablers for Comes With Music”.

Enablers? Presumably that means at some point, Nokia will flick a switch and allow N95 8GB users to subscribe to Comes With Music somehow. Which in turn raises the prospect that buying a new phone WON’T be the only way to get your hands on Nokia’s unlimited music subscription service.

How this works in practice remains to be seen though: presumably you’ll pay some kind of monthly fee. It’s an intriguing development though, since all the talk up until now has focused on Comes With Music being a ‘buy the phone, get unlimited music’ service, rather than ‘own the phone already, still get unlimited music’.
