The 8 megapixel monsters are really starting to come out of the woodwork now. Samsung’s INNOV8 is scarcely out of the block but it seems that the company had to do something to answer LG’s recently announced full touchscreen 8 megapixel offering, the LG-KC910 (or Renoir for short). Behold then, the Samsung Pixon M8800, a camera phone with more photography bells and whistles than you can shake an Annie Liebovitz autobiography at.
Indeed this behemoth appears to be four parts camera, one part phone. It has an 8 megapixel lens with autofocus, 16x digital zoom, LED flash, ASR (Advanced Shake Reduction), WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) and face detection. Beyond that it has Geotagging support via integrated GPS and a photo browser that you can use to tilt photos to the appropriate orientation automatically by way of an in-built accelerometer.
And that’s just stills, on the video side the Pixon sports 30 fps normal video capture, 120 fps slow motion capture, support for every popular video format under the sun and a TV-out port.
Of course if you really want to, you can use it to make phone calls too being that it is a Quad Band GSM EDGE handset with HSDPA 7.2 Mbps connectivity. The screen is something of a mystery, we know that it’s a 3.2? 240 × 400 262K color WQVGA TFT offering, but there is no official word yet on whether it is a touchscreen.
Seeing as the design doesn’t seem to include a numeric pad (unless it’s a slider, which it doesn’t appear to be) our guess is that it simply must be a touchscreen handset, otherwise it wouldn’t have much to differentiate it from the INNOV8.
Either way, the Pixon is looking like a conscientious step forward for serious camera phones and we don’t have long to wait to see it in the flesh. The handset should be hitting French shelves sometime towards the middle of October, following in the rest of Europe shortly after.
