We’ve been waiting for an age for an official announcement concerning Nokia’s first touchscreen handset, the Tube, so we are delighted to learn that the big date for the grand unveiling will be (drum roll please) October 2nd. Given that we have already heard that the device should be on sale in the UK by the 8th of October, an announcement ought to come soon, if that date is indeed true.
Leaked images and info about the handset have been circulating for the best part of a year now, but Nokia has never been one to do a ‘me too’ with its handsets, preferring instead to stick to the slow and steady wins the race pace that has served it so well. Nokia delivered 3G and slim handsets in its own sweet time, well after other manufacturers brought those advances to market, and still managed to establish itself as the market leader in both of those areas.
So the fact that Nokia has taken nearly 18 months to announce a handset to parry the iPhone’s specific advances should not necessarily be seen as a sign of Nokia lagging behind, but rather, making sure it gets its own touchscreen handset right. Our expectations are certainly high, and these freshly leaked press shot has done nothing to dampen our excitement.
Still, the iPhone has shaken up the handset industry with a violence seldom seen before. Let’s just hope that by this time next week, we have good reason to say, never underestimate Nokia.
