Nokia And Nuance To Take Speech Recognition Mainstream

Nokia has announced a deal with Nuance Communications that will see Nuance’s speech recognition tech appearing in Nokia handsets.

As well as building in some speech recognition functions, Nokia will also allow third party developers to use the tech via a series of APIs.

Nuance’s Michael Thompson claimed that the technology could be used in many different areas – “dictation—both email and SMS—mobile search, navigation, and mobile music search.”

I’d like to see some of the more devious Symbian coders have a crack at this – I quite fancy an app that will listen for keywords in my phone conversations and automagically make diary entries, for example.
