T-mobile G1 sales figures somewhat exaggerated

It seems that reports about the T-Mobile G1 shifting 1.5 million pre-orders are actually just a rampant blaze of blogosphere Chinese whispers rather than actual sales. Considering that the iPhone, which launched in 20 countries simultaneously, only managed to rack up one million units in its first weekend, it should have been more apparent that the G1’s figures of 1.5 million were a little exaggerated. Don’t worry, we’ve slapped our own wrists too.

It turns out that the source of the erroneous figures was in fact a mathematician at The Motley Fool who after hearing that T-Mobile had tripled its initial pre-order units of 500,000 did that as a straight multiplication of units rather than actual sales to get 1.5 million. Actual sales are probably more around the 200,00 to 300,000 mark which is still not at all bad, especially seeing as it is only available in one region, on one carrier.

In fact, seeing as the device is a belter by all accounts, T-Mobile might not have to wait long to see sales that match the speculation – it’s bound to do well when it hits these shores at the end of the month.
