iPhone 2.2 update to bring direct podcast downloads

Podcasts are still one of Apple best but least shouted about inventions and the word on the street is that the iPhone 2.2 software update will allow your iPhone to wirelessly download them.

The feature is part of the revamped and rebuffed mobile iTunes Store that’s set for inclusion in the imminent 2.2 software update and German blog, Flo’s Weblog, has managed to snaffle a few pics of the new podcast section.

Apparently, Apple will initially cap podcast downloads at 10MB and at present it’s unclear, if the feature will be restricted to iPhones on a 3G connection, or if EDGE network downloads will be available too.

What we want to know is if the iPhone will be able to download podcasts that you have subscribed to automatically and on the fly, so that you get a happy surprise when you are out and about and longing for something new to listen to. It’s a minor detail, but for gadget pedants like us, it makes all the difference.

We’ll print confirmation of the 2.2 update list as soon as we have it folks.

The answer is apparently no. You have to manually click each episode, from every podcast to download making this feature a disaster.

  2. Robert Cox says:

FYI, Apple did not invent podcasts.

Despite the name, they were “invented” through a collaboration between Dave Winer and Adam Curry. Podcasting was first demo’d for a live audience at BloggerCon III at Stanford Law School by Dave and Adam.
