With environmental campaigners up in arms about ’standby’ devices and unused chargers wasting electricity and strangling the very life out of the planet, it was inevitable that mobile manufacturers would have to address the issue.
Nokia has made a particularly good start, with its ‘green’ charger, but for real change there needs to be action across the industry. Three cheers then for Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and LG Electronics – the five biggest mobile manufacturers who have joined together like an environmental G-Force to launch an industry-wide rating system for mobile phone chargers.
No, you are quite right, it doesn’t sound very interesting – but it may help to focus some attention on the issue and should at least give consumers an idea of just how planet-murdery they are being by leaving the N95 plugged in all weekend. Armed with this knowledeg, personal behaviour can change and pressure can be applied to ensure that wasteful devices are phased out.
