Truphone brings (more) mobile VoIP to the iPod Touch

The iPod touch is a magical little box of oohs and aahs. It falls just short of the iPhone for not having a phone or 3G, but then, that’s pretty much the point. One of those features can be scored off the missing list however, as Truphone has released an iPod touch version of its mobile VoIP application that allows you to make calls over the device’s WiFi connection.

Of course, you will need to be tooled up with an external microphone adapter (available from Apple Stores and apparently, soon, direct from Truphone too) to make the calls with. But even if you find yourself short of the necessary hardware, you will still be able to use the application with instant messaging services such as Skype and MSN.
Truphone is not the first to the party with this one. One of the other big VoIP players, fring, launched it’s own iPhone/iPod touch compatible client a couple of months ago. It’s interesting that both companies have targeted the iPod touch, as opposed to the iPhone, with their respective applications.

Perhaps it’s because it essentially adds more extra functionality to that device than it does to the iPhone, but either way, free wireless calling has landed in earnest on Apple’s ‘funnest iPod ever’.
