Windows Mobile shifts 20 million phones in 12 months

After Apple’s relatively quiet showing at this week’s MacWorld, Microsoft’s CES (Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas) keynote featured some welcome chest beating from the ever charismatic Steve Balmer (pictured here eating a giant invisible hotdog).

Addressing the company’s performance with Windows Mobile Balmer enthused:

“I’m excited about the momentum we have…We have delivered 11 different mobile phones that have each sold a million units each, and in the past year, we’ve brought to market over 30 new Windows Mobile phones, or more than any other mobile platform in the market….and our partners have sold more than 20 million Windows Phones in the past 12 months.”
Whether you love or hate Microsoft’s mobile OS, it’s hard to argue with figures like that, especially considering Apple’s iPhone has only shifted just over ten million units (though in terms of mindshare, Apple’s device makes Windows Mobile look like a very little fish in an enormous pond).

At any rate, it seems that business-wise, Windows Mobile is in rude health and on a rock solid footing for 2009. Looking to the future Balmer went on

“We are at the start of transforming what Windows is…I’m proud of what we are delivering across the PC, in the cloud and on the phone.”

The battle for smartphone supremacy wages on…
