Apparently over two million people in Japan use their mobiles to read manga on the move, and around half that number use Celsys’ BookSurfing service – at least that’s what they told us at the Mobile World Congress 09.
The company had some demo phones on show – it was all in Japanese so didn’t mean anything to us – but the transitions between graphical frames were nice and smooth. Apparently vibration and sound effects can also be incorporated.
Of course, whether the company finds any takers in terms of licensing the manga service in Europe or North America, we’re not so sure. The tech can be used to create and distribute photo collections though, so there may be some takers for that side of the operation.
