iPhone app hands-on: ColorSplash

The iPhone is not really the go-to device for high grade image manipulation. But for us peasants, unable to afford a nice tablet PC, the iPhone’s touchscreen does present a tantalizing opportunity to have a go at some fancypants digital finger painting.

At least it does in conjunction with the recently released app, ColorSplash. The app is a simple tool for highlighting and picking out either colour or grayscale sections in any images saved on your iPhone, for a nice two tone desaturated effect. After selecting an image, you are presented with two versions of it, a grayscale and a colour one (assuming the original image wasn’t already a black and white image) layered on top of one another.

You can then use a brush tool with your finger to rub through the grey scale image to the colour one or vice versa. The brush tool comes with four different blur levels so if you want a nice soft transition between hue and grey, you can have that. Or if you would rather sharply pick out a single object in the shot, that’s possible too.

It’s all very intuitive to use and the iPhone’s patented pinch and pull gestures for zooming in and out are put to good use. Every shot you manipulate can naturally be saved on your device, and then easily synced back to your PC or Mac’s photo library too.

The main drawback is that currently, any image larger than 1024 pixels (as in anything taken with a half decent camera) is automatically scaled down at the saving stage, resulting in a considerable loss in clarity. For snaps taken with the iPhone’s camera however, ColorSplash works really quite well.

Simple, fun to use, with the ability to produce reasonably impressive results, ColorSplash is a neat little image manipulation app and is available from the App Store now, priced £1.19. Check out our own handiwork below.
