Review: Air Mouse Pro (iPhone)

There aren’t many applications that achieve a balance between practicality and the hallowed wow factor so often ascribed to the iPhone’s various features. Air Mouse Pro flaunts convention however, by being as showy and impressive as it is useful.

Air Mouse Pro basically turns your iPhone/iPod Touch’s  touchscreen into a remote trackpad for your desktop or laptop computer (Windows or Mac). After downloading the iPhone application, you then need to download a second client for the computer you intend to control remotely.

When testing the Mac version, set-up was seamless with absolutely no bothersome configuration. It’s super responsive too, providing a trackpad, a scroll wheel, two mouse buttons, and all of your computer’s function keys plus extras such as the directional keys.

You can also call up the iPhone’s touchscreen QWERTY keyboard for typing and helpfully, Air Mouse Pro flashes up which application window you are using on the iPhone’s screen, so there can be no confusion about where you are typing.

Besides the standard mouse and keyboard functions, there are iTunes and browser shortcuts built into the interface, so you can perform functions such as skip a track by tapping one button, rather than navigate to the skip button with the mouse, or even open your browser’s bookmarks folder with a single press.

What’s most impressive is how fully integrated Air Mouse Pro is with whichever operating system or machine you are using. Using it with a MacBook allowed for all of the two fingered gestures for scrolling and right clicking to work, without any trouble at all.

For anybody that regularly performs computer based presentations Air Mouse Pro is an absolute dream then, especially where making use of several different applications in one presentation. Irksomely, there are no pre-programmed shortcut functions for Keynote of PowerPoint, but these can be manually ascribed to hot keys via the PC/Mac based client, which is simple, so it’s really not such a problem.

Ultimately, Air Mouse Pro is slick, easy to use and is an absolutely essential purchase for anyone who regularly does demonstrations or presentations.
