Picture and video messaging finally coming in iPhone 3.0 update

Addressing what is easily the biggest, most glaring omission in the device’s featureset, Apple looks set to introduce picture and video messaging to iPhone when it releases its 3.0 firmware update this summer.

Business Week reiterates an earlier report by Gizmodo that indeed the new software includes video recording functionality. Reporter Peter Burrows claims sources “familiar with Apple’s plans for the next iPhone” have confirmed that video will be a large part of the update.

A suite of editing tools will be included, Burrows states, that will allow you to form clips from longer recordings that can be saved via iTunes on your home computer or uploaded to YouTube.

The piece published in early April by Gizmodo provides more tantalising details. Along with the ability to shoot and save videos on your iPhone, you will be able to send them parallel to SMS messages. Screen captures of the 3.0 firmware show a text message log with a thumbnail video image that can be clicked to play.

Recording video is a simple matter of flicking a new switch embedded within the camera, situated at the bottomright of the screen. Videos are then store alongside photos in the camera roll, which will feature tabs for each.

Expect official word of the features to come from Apple during the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
