Maybe I’m being too mean about Acer and its new smartphones. Okay, so the DX900 is a bit weird because it only really makes sense if you want a dual SIM phone for business, but it’s *not* that badly equiped, even if it is a little clunky/chunky.
So maybe I’m just too anti-Windows Mobile. Well, I am kinda anti-Windows Mobile, but I’m certainly not as anti-Windows Mobile as some people, so surely that can’t count as *too*…
Anyhoo, one of its sister phones in the five-strong Acer Tempo Smartphone Series – the X960 – is cheaper (£300 versus £400) – and also more of an obvious purchase for normal people.
Acer has been sneaking out the X960 for awhile and but has now press released the fact so we’re now writing about it. It’s very similar to the DX900 in that is has the same 2.8-inch, 640 x 480 touchscreen, uses the same 533MHz Samsung S3C 6400 CPU, and the same SiRFStar III GPS chip. The same Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi and quad-band GSM is in full effect too.
The camera is slightly worse – 3MP versus 5MP in the DX900 – but still with autofocus and flash, and there’s the same front-facing VGA for video calling. Also, as you’d expect with Acer, the X960 uses Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional and thus you get all the software that floats (bloats?) with it.
Okay, I have a G1. Get over it.
