Nokia trialing indoor location tech in Helsinki

Nokia has been leading the way in location-based technology with various Beta Labs projects like Nokia Friend View that show the locations of fellow Nokia owners on a Nokia Maps interface.

As you scroll around a Nokia Map (or a Google Map for that matter) you will of course notice that you can’t actually go inside any buildings – but don’t worry, Nokia are on the case.

Nokia has just kicked off the second phase of its Indoor Location trials. The Kamppi shopping mall near Helsinki has been kitted out with an array of wifi access points that give fast internet access and have been strategically position to allow easy triangulation of your location on a much finer scale than basic GPS.

As you wander the mall, special S60 software will keep a central server apprised of your movements and anyone registered as a Friend can see where you are. The software makes it easy to send SMS messages to your list of friends and use the map of the mall to arrange a meeting place.

If you are likely to be anywhere near Helsinki, Nokia say that you are welcome to head on over to Kamppi, download the free app from Beta Labs and give it a try.If a trip to Finland is out of your budget range, you can take a look at the Kamppi mobile site here.

Here is a nice chap from the Beta Labs team to tell you all about it.
